چکیده

High resolution, non-oscillatory, central difference (NOCD) numerical schemes are introduced as alternatives to more traditional artificial viscosity (AV) and Godunov methods for solving the fully general relativistic hydrody-namics equations. These new approaches provide the advantages of Godunov methods in capturing ultra-relativistic flows without the cost and complication of Riemann solvers, and the advantages of AV methods in their speed, ease of implementation, and general applicability without explicitly using artificial viscosity for shock capturing. Shock tube, wall shock, and dust accretion tests are presented and compared against equivalent solutions from both AV and Godunov based codes. In the process we address the accuracy of time-explicit NOCD and AV methods over a wide range of Lorentz factors.

According to two estimated relations between the initial period and the dynamo-generated magnetic dipole field of pulsars, we calculate the statistical distributions of pulsar initial periods. It is found that proto-pulsars are very likely to have rotation periods between 20 and 30 ms, and that most of the pulsars rotate initially at a period < 60 ms.

We derive a condition for converging a common evolutionary track (“tracking condition”) for k-essence (a scalar field dark energy with non-canonical kinetic terms). For the Lagrangian density V (φ)W (X) with X = φ̇/2, we find tracker solutions with wφ < wB exist if Γ ≡ V V/(V ) > 3/2. Here wφ(wB) is the equation-of-state of the scalar field (background radiation/matter). Our condition may be use...

We present 3 years of photometry of the " Double Hamburger " lensed quasar, HE1104−1805, obtained on 102 separate nights using the OGLE 1.3-m telescope. Both the A and B images show variations, but with substantial differences in the lighcurves at all time delays. At the 310 d delay reported by Wisotzki and collaborators the difference lightcurve has an rms amplitude of 0.060 mag. The structure...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT The random error of radioastronomical measurements is usually computed in the weak-signal limit, which assumes that the system temperature is sensibly the same on and off source, or with and without a spectral line. This assumption is often very poor. We give examples of common situations in which it is important to distinguish the system noise in signal-beari...
